How to Reset the Oil Change Light on a 2002–2006 Toyota Camry

Introduction

The “MAINT REQD” light on a Toyota Camry, 2002–2006, usually comes on every 5,000 miles to remind you it is time for an oil change. If you have already changed the oil yourself or had it done at a shop, you can reset this light at home in under a minute.

Tools and prep

  • Level parking spot
  • Ignition key
  • Owner’s manual (optional but recommended for reference)

Step-by-step: Resetting the oil change light (key ignition models)

  1. Turn the key to ON
  • Sit in the driver’s seat and turn the key to the ON position, but do not start the engine.
  • If the engine starts, switch it off and try again more gently.
  1. Select the odometer (not Trip A/B)
  • Use the trip/odometer button to show the regular ODO mileage, not Trip A or Trip B.
  • The button is usually on the instrument cluster near the speedometer.
  1. Turn the key OFF
  • Turn the key all the way back to OFF, then leave your finger off the button for now.
  1. Press and hold the trip/odometer reset button
  • Press and hold the same trip/ODO button with one hand.
  • Keep it held down firmly.
  1. Turn the key back to ON and wait.
  • While still holding the button, turn the key back to ON (again, do not start the engine).
  • Watch the odometer screen; it will show dashes that turn into zeros and then return to normal mileage, and the MAINT REQD light should go out.
  1. Release the button and verify.
  • Release the button once the mileage shows normally again.
  • Turn the key off, then start the engine to confirm the maintenance light is off.

When to use this reset

  • After every oil and filter change (about every 5,000 miles for most drivers).
  • Never use it to “hide” overdue maintenance—this reminder is there to protect your engine.

Quick troubleshooting

  • If the light stays on, repeat the steps slowly; timing matters with the key and button.
  • If it still will not reset, there could be a cluster issue or another warning; consult a trusted mechanic.
